Research firm SemiAnalysis reports that Nvidia's Kyber rack architecture — designed to house Rubin Ultra chips — may be delayed by more than a year, potentially arriving in 2028 instead of the originally planned 2027 launch. The CNBC article conveyed SemiAnalysis's findings.

What is Kyber and why it matters

Kyber is a rack-level design that integrates 144 high-end NVIDIA chips into a single unit to operate as one large, scalable system. The architecture is intended to deliver the compute capacity needed to train and run the most advanced AI models. Instead of the traditional horizontal layout, GPUs are mounted on vertical trays to increase density and reduce latency.

Root cause: the midplane PCB

SemiAnalysis attributes the delay to manufacturing difficulties with a critical component known as the midplane printed circuit board (midplane PCB). This board is responsible for connecting electronic modules within the system, and producing it remains a technical challenge according to the report.

Impact on scaling and the NVL576

The production issues are likely to affect the NVL576 as well — a system that links eight racks via optical connections to enable even larger, multi-rack configurations. SemiAnalysis says the NVL576 will probably be delayed or only available in limited quantities.

A failed fallback plan

Nvidia had contemplated a contingency that would tie together two current-generation racks to approximate the Kyber-level performance. That backup option reportedly failed to deliver because cloud providers were not willing or prepared to adopt the solution at the necessary scale.

Competitive implications

SemiAnalysis warns that the inability to scale Rubin Ultra systems seamlessly opens a window for competitors, notably AMD and Google, which already have orders for their in-house chips from leading AI research groups. At the same time, production of Nvidia's current-generation Rubin systems is underway, and autumn deliveries are planned for eight major cloud partners, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

Financial outlook

SemiAnalysis projects that Nvidia's data center revenues in the second half of fiscal 2027 could exceed Wall Street analysts' expectations by about 20 percent.

Timing

Although Rubin Ultra and Kyber were originally scheduled to debut together in 2027, SemiAnalysis concludes that current manufacturing challenges could push broad availability into 2028.
