At the SAP Sapphire conference this year, SAP introduced its "Autonomous Enterprise" concept aimed at elevating critical business processes through close collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence. The initiative centers on embedding AI agents directly into enterprise workflows, data environments and governance systems so organizations can respond faster, more efficiently and securely to changing global business conditions.
Christian Klein emphasized that "for our customers, a nearly right solution for critical business processes is not acceptable." According to SAP, the integration of the SAP Business AI Platform with the SAP Autonomous Suite enables AI agents to operate with precision, compliance and security while creating new revenue opportunities and significant cost savings.
SAP Business AI Platform: an enterprise AI foundation
The SAP Business AI Platform is presented as a unified, enterprise-grade AI environment built specifically for developing and running business applications. It brings together the SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Business AI solutions to provide a controlled and secure development environment.
A key component is the SAP Knowledge Graph, which maps business entities, processes and relationships across a customer’s full SAP landscape to give AI agents the necessary context. Joule Studio lets organizations build enterprise AI agents, applications and automated workflows, with developers able to choose no-code, pro-code or AI-driven development approaches. SAP says all of this runs on a scalable, secure infrastructure optimized for enterprise AI.
SAP Autonomous Suite: automating business processes
Built on the new platform, the SAP Autonomous Suite extends SAP business applications with AI-driven agents to enable wide-ranging process automation. The suite supports more than 50 industry- and function-specific Joule Assistants across areas such as finance, procurement, supply chain, HR and customer experience.
SAP states these assistants coordinate the collaboration of more than 200 specialized AI agents to automate sub-tasks and manage end-to-end business processes. A highlighted capability is the Autonomous Close Assistant, which SAP says can reduce financial close times from weeks to days by automating tasks like journal entry posting, reconciliations and exception handling.
SAP also announced Industry AI solutions that add seven autonomous, industry-specific applications to its portfolio, designed to incorporate sector-specific business logic, data models and regulatory requirements.
Customer example: RWE partnership
At Sapphire, SAP described a collaboration with RWE intended to reduce unplanned outages at offshore wind farms. In the SAP Autonomous Asset Management solution, AI agents analyze thousands of past incidents to identify the most likely failure causes and then prepare pre-filled work orders with the right tools and previously validated repair procedures.
Joule Work: a new user experience
Joule Work is an AI-powered user experience that changes how users interact with SAP systems. Rather than switching between multiple apps and screens, users can state the business outcome they want and Joule will coordinate the required data, workflows and AI agents. Joule Work not only acts as a conversational assistant but also proactively surfaces relevant information and automates routine tasks in the background. The system will be available on desktop, mobile and voice interfaces and can work in both SAP and non-SAP environments.
Funding, programs and migration support
SAP has established a €100 million fund to support partners in implementing SAP AI assistants and agents for customers and in developing new agents on the SAP Business AI Platform. The company also updated its RISE with SAP and SAP GROW offerings to simplify and accelerate AI adoption: RISE customers receive three Joule Assistants in the first year, while GROW customers gain immediate access to the full assistant portfolio.
SAP said on-premises SAP S/4HANA and SAP ECC customers that agree to a phased migration to SAP Cloud ERP will gain access to certain AI capabilities during the migration. The company also introduced AI-based transformation tools that it claims can reduce ERP migration effort by more than 35 percent through automation of analysis, code remediation, configuration and testing tasks.
Partner ecosystem
SAP announced a range of strategic platform and technology partners, including Anthropic, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft, Mistral AI, Cohere, NVIDIA, Parloa and n8n. Implementation partners mentioned include Palantir, Accenture and Conduct.
SAP’s Autonomous Enterprise vision aims to embed enterprise AI and automation deeply into operations. The practical impact—wider customer adoption, demonstrated return on investment and realized efficiency gains—will become clearer as implementations and customer case studies scale.
