Jeff Bezos, founder of Blue Origin, told CNBC that while deploying data centers in orbit is a realistic scenario, it will likely take longer to implement than some in the industry expect. He said timelines of two to three years being discussed by some are probably overly optimistic.

Bezos highlighted energy supply as the primary technical and economic challenge for space-based data centers. Proponents of the idea argue that abundant solar energy in orbit could meet the massive power needs of artificial intelligence, and that the approach does not require large land areas on Earth.

He also noted that the price of microchips must decline to free up capital in project budgets for building space infrastructure. Bezos added that launch costs are also expected to continue falling, which would be another necessary factor for making such projects economically viable.

Blue Origin’s plans: Project Sunrise and TeraWave

In March, Blue Origin filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Under its "Project Sunrise" program, the company proposes to launch a total of 51,600 data-center satellites into low Earth orbit. These units would be served by the planned TeraWave satellite constellation, for which deployment is targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Bezos’s comments come as SpaceX prepares for a possible initial public offering (IPO), a development that has already pushed up share prices in the sector. Blue Origin’s strategy also includes deploying industrial production on the Moon. Bezos envisions manufacturing solar panels from materials found on the lunar surface, which would be cheaper to lift into space due to the Moon’s lower gravity. The company is also working with NASA and the U.S. government on establishing a permanent lunar base and on enhancing U.S. space defense capabilities.
