On February 13, 2026, Anthropic announced that Chris Liddell has been appointed to its Board of Directors. Liddell brings more than 30 years of senior leadership experience from some of the world’s largest and most complex organizations.
Why the appointment matters
Daniela Amodei, Co-founder and President of Anthropic, said Liddell’s career sits at the intersection of technology, public service, and governance, and that he has a track record of helping organizations align those areas when stakes are highest. Anthropic noted that as AI’s societal impact grows, the judgment and experience Liddell offers are precisely what the board seeks.
Board composition and corporate form
Liddell will serve on the board alongside Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Yasmin Razavi, Jay Kreps, and Reed Hastings. Anthropic is organized as a Public Benefit Corporation, and its board is elected by shareholders and the Long-Term Benefit Trust, as the company has described.
Liddell’s background and previous roles
Liddell previously served as Chief Financial Officer of Microsoft, General Motors, and International Paper. He also served as Deputy White House Chief of Staff during President Donald Trump’s first term. He currently serves as a director of Commonwealth Fusion Systems and the Council on Foreign Relations.
Government, transition work and nonprofit involvement
Liddell has participated in several presidential transition teams and has written a book on that topic. At the White House he served as Director of the American Technology Council, focusing on modernizing government technology. Beyond his corporate and public-service roles, he has held leadership positions in philanthropy and nonprofit governance: he is currently chairman of New Zealand’s largest environmental foundation and has sat on several nonprofit boards, including the New Zealand Rugby Union.
In 2016 he was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and philanthropy.
Liddell’s statement
Liddell said his career has taught him that governance of transformative technologies matters as much as the technologies themselves. He added that Anthropic’s approach — building AI that is both capable and responsible — is critical for the future, and that he is proud to join the company’s board.
