Cursor announced Origin, a code-hosting platform intended to compete directly with GitHub. Origin provides repository storage, pull request support and collaborative editing. The platform is interoperable with GitHub, allowing developers to sync repositories between the two services.
Launch coincides with a major GitHub outage
Origin’s debut occurred on the same day GitHub experienced a global outage lasting six hours, during which an almost 20% error rate was reported worldwide. According to the same reporting, GitHub has had 257 outages over the past year.
Why this matters
GitHub continues to host an estimated 180 million developers, and for most users the cost and friction of switching remain high. Historically, alternatives to GitHub were smaller startups without the balance sheets or user base necessary to make migration practical at scale.
Cursor’s entry changes that dynamic: the company has financial backing tied to Elon Musk, ships an AI editor that runs on developers’ machines, and now offers a platform that interoperates with GitHub. Those factors, together with recurring GitHub outages, make Origin a more credible exit option for developers than prior alternatives.

GitHub is not collapsing today and will likely remain the dominant host for many users in the near term.
