Deutsche Telekom, which serves more than 300 million customers across Europe and the United States and employs over 200,000 people in the group, is treating generative AI not as a simple productivity tool but as a catalyst for reshaping its operating model. Leadership set out to become one of the world’s first AI-native telcos — embedding AI into how decisions are made, how customer journeys are designed, and how services are delivered.
Employee workflows and adoption
In the first phase, Deutsche Telekom deployed ChatGPT Enterprise and encouraged employees to experiment. Adoption was fast: staff integrated AI into their daily work much as they do in their private lives, creating demand for broader access and additional capabilities.
The company emphasizes that becoming AI-native means more than adding tools to existing processes. As Jonathan Abrahamson, Chief Product & Digital Officer at Deutsche Telekom, put it: “Becoming AI-native is not about adding AI to the way we work today. It is about redesigning the work itself.”
Customer service: early investments and long-term potential
Customer care was one of the earliest areas of investment. Abrahamson says AI-powered customer service is still at an early stage, but holds significant medium- and long-term potential. As these systems accumulate context, learn from interactions, and remove common friction such as handoffs and wait times, they could in some scenarios outperform traditional support models.
Voice communications and real-time features
Deutsche Telekom is extending AI beyond background systems into the core communication experiences customers use daily. Working with OpenAI and other partners, the company is piloting capabilities such as real-time translation, in-call assistants, and post-call summaries that do not require customers to adopt new applications.
This approach aims to move AI out of standalone apps and into familiar communication channels, making AI more broadly accessible without the need for specialized devices, apps, or technical expertise.
Network operations: dynamic optimization with AI
AI is also being embedded in network operations. Deutsche Telekom uses AI with various partners to optimize mobile network performance in real time, dynamically reallocating resources as demand shifts during the day — for example, from commuters heading to work to crowds attending major sporting events.

With a customer base of more than 300 million, the company sees an opportunity to make AI available through the networks people already rely on. For Deutsche Telekom, becoming AI-native is not just a future vision — it is an ongoing transformation that is already affecting customer service, network management, and everyday communication.
