The Trump administration will announce new import restrictions on advanced Chinese-made robots and network-connected power inverters, U.S. officials told Reuters. The measures are intended to protect American artificial intelligence development and critical supply chains from national security risks.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is expected to publish the actions on Tuesday afternoon. The restrictions would bar the import of new Chinese-manufactured humanoid and four-legged robots, and would also cover networked power inverters — devices that connect renewable energy systems, batteries and data-center equipment to the electrical grid.
U.S. officials said the prohibitions aim both to reduce risks such as operational disruption, data theft and cyberattacks, and to encourage companies to relocate production of key technologies to the United States. An unnamed government official said the president had made clear that the United States needs independent and secure supply chains for critical and emerging technologies, including robotics and power inverters, and that economic security is national security.
The Chinese embassy in Washington had not responded to requests for comment.
