Gemini Spark, Google’s AI agent designed to assist with parts of users’ digital lives, is now available on macOS. Google announced on Wednesday that Spark is being added to the existing Gemini desktop app along with several updates and new features.
Capabilities on macOS
The macOS version of Spark can work with files on the computer — for example, sorting and organizing files or using local files as the basis for new Google Workspace documents or spreadsheets. Google gives an example where invoices stored on a computer could be converted by Spark into a budgeting worksheet. The update also introduces real‑time topic tracking and reaction to events, which should improve handling tasks like following sports scores, stock movements, or breaking news. The same tracking can monitor areas such as social media, blogs, online shopping, and weather.
Expanded integrations
Google has extended Spark’s integrations to include more first‑party services, notably Google Tasks and Google Keep. Spark also now connects with several third‑party apps and services, including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. Those integrations enable Spark to perform tasks such as reserving tables, ordering weekly groceries, designing flyers, or booking apartment tours.
Remote and multi‑step tasks planned
At launch the ability to assign multi‑step tasks from phones to Spark on the desktop — for instance, asking the phone agent to pull information from a file on a Mac — is not yet available. Google says this capability will arrive “soon,” enabling closer coordination between mobile and desktop agents for remote tasks.
Availability and limitations
Gemini Spark for macOS (beta) is currently available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.
Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Google is also rolling out support for a custom Model Context Protocol (MCP). MCP will let users connect their preferred apps directly into Spark to build an assistant tailored to their needs.
Competitive context
With the macOS launch, Gemini Spark becomes a stronger competitor among desktop AI agents such as Claude Desktop, Microsoft’s Copilot, and OpenClaw, because it can operate on local files and — once remote multi‑step tasks are enabled — handle cross‑device workflows.
Responding to earlier feedback
When Spark launched last month, early tests noted the absence of a Google Keep integration as a notable gap, since short lists and simple notes are often better suited to a notes app than to a full document. Google has addressed that feedback by adding support for Keep and Tasks in this release.
In short: the Gemini Spark macOS beta brings new integrations and real‑time monitoring to the desktop agent, but is initially limited by regional access and subscriber requirements, with further multi‑step remote capabilities promised soon.
