Google expands Gemini-powered Chrome features outside the US but excludes the EU

Google has widened the rollout of Gemini-based features in the Chrome browser beyond the United States, adding desktop and iPhone availability in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

Google expands Gemini-powered Chrome features outside the US but excludes the EU

Earlier this year Google began integrating its Gemini artificial intelligence into the Chrome browser, initially rolling the new features out to users in the United States. According to reports, the update proved popular with American users despite surveys indicating a general dislike of artificial intelligence.

In March Google started a wider global launch, and the company has now continued that rollout. The Gemini-powered chatbot is available in the desktop version of Chrome and in the iPhone version on markets in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

The European Union has been left out of this expansion for the time being, which means users in Hungary and other EU countries cannot access the AI-enhanced Chrome release.

What the Gemini features do

The browser-integrated solution provides several capabilities, all accessible from Chrome's sidebar so users do not need to leave the page they are viewing. Key features include:

  • Summarizing the content of web pages.
  • Comparing information with content open in other tabs.
  • Generating and editing images using Nano Banana 2.
  • Working with other Google applications, for example creating entries in Google Calendar, assisting with sending emails, and answering questions about YouTube videos.

By operating from the sidebar, these functions aim to reduce context switching and streamline workflows.

Why this matters

Embedding AI features directly into the browser is a notable step for browser-based artificial intelligence, offering a more integrated user experience. The exclusion of the EU from the current rollout suggests that regulatory, privacy or market considerations continue to influence how and when such AI services are introduced in European markets.
