What if you no longer had to scroll through your inbox to schedule a follow-up medical appointment, or type on a small keyboard while commuting to send an email? Google and other tech giants envision a future in which AI agents perform such routine tasks on our phones without requiring constant commands, potentially freeing up users’ time.
At its latest Pixel reveal, Google introduced features that point toward that future. The Pixel 11 Pro includes a new rear light that indicates when Gemini is processing a command or producing a response. Android will also receive a feature called Halo later this year, which visually shows the progress of an AI agent as it works on a task.
Three-year planning and focusing on user goals
Sameer Samat, president of the Google Android ecosystem, said Android development typically plans roughly three years ahead for how consumers will use their phones. The company presents the newly announced features as a window into how it imagines AI-transformed smartphones.
Samat described the vision as one where users state their goals — what they want to achieve — and the system is smart enough to carry out those tasks on their behalf. He also acknowledged growing concerns about the social and economic effects of the technology, and noted that current capabilities remain far from the ideal the company has outlined.
Less micromanagement, fewer app switches
Google argues that the future could reduce the need to hop between apps to complete a task. Samat gave an example of an AI agent that could read medical notes, confirm insurance coverage with a provider, and then schedule an MRI appointment — a workflow that is not yet possible on Android but one the company would like to move toward.
The company aims to reduce the amount of micromanagement required of devices; Android currently runs on more than 70 percent of the world’s smartphones, giving the platform substantial reach for any such shift.
New tools: activity light, Halo and Rambler
The Pixel 11 Pro’s rear activity light signals when Gemini is actively processing a command or composing a reply, which Google hopes will encourage users to interact vocally with a virtual assistant without picking up the phone to check whether the agent is listening. Halo, arriving on Android later this year, will visually represent how an AI agent is progressing through a task.
Google also unveiled Rambler on Pixel 11 devices — first announced in May — which cleans and processes spoken language and converts it into text or email, removing fillers and disfluencies such as “uh” or “actually.”
The industry is turning toward AI agents — but users are wary
The Pixel announcements reflect a broader industry trend toward AI agents. Samsung, one of the world’s largest phone makers by market share, is integrating Gemini deeply into its software alongside Google. Apple plans to release a revamped Siri later this year that the company says will operate across apps and use personal information to craft responses. OpenAI released a significant update to ChatGPT last month to make conversations feel more natural.
At the same time, consumers are increasingly cautious about AI: a Pew Research poll finds a majority of Americans believe AI will have a negative effect on society, and a Gallup and Bentley University survey indicates 79 percent of Americans do not trust companies to use AI responsibly.
Remaining questions
It remains unclear whether Google’s technologies will deliver on their promises or whether they will actually reduce the amount of time people spend on their phones. As Samat put it, “AI” has accumulated many meanings, and the more important question is how the technology actually helps individuals.
The path forward will depend not only on technical development but also on public trust and how companies address the societal risks associated with AI.
