A growing class split is shaping how Americans experience artificial intelligence. A relatively small group of frontier users treat AI as a revolutionary force: capable of creating companies, building software and solving complex problems at high speed. For most people, however, AI feels like an evolution: a smarter search bar, a faster inbox and ambient features that save time but do not fundamentally transform work or daily life.

Trillions of dollars of economic value and the livelihoods of millions of workers are being wagered on a technology that most Americans neither fully understand nor trust. This is a new chapter in America's digital divide — described as AI "haves," "have-nots" and "know-nots" — with important implications for wealth, jobs and power.

Who is at the frontier — and why most people don't see it

The newest frontier models are built for an agentic world of coding, research and cybersecurity — areas most Americans will never operate in. OpenAI's Sol and Anthropic's Fable now occupy the top of the pyramid of elite AI attention because they can run long coding and research loops with minimal human intervention.

AI researcher Peter Gostev personified the two models on Twitter, saying "Fable is a 'wise owl' who is very thoughtful and very well spoken," while "GPT-5.6-Sol is like a rottweiler who will grab the problem by the throat and not let go until it is done." Such descriptions have become status markers inside developer circles: early access itself confers prestige.

In reality, the people fluent enough to evaluate Sol versus Fable on coding benchmarks are a tiny slice of the country. For most Americans, those names and technical metrics mean little.

How most people encounter AI

Millions encounter AI passively or unknowingly: through search summaries, AI-generated content, customer-service bots and invisible app features. Nearly half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, but the most common use is basic information search — effectively the job Google has been doing for two decades. OpenAI reports more than 50 million paying subscribers within a weekly ChatGPT user base of over 900 million; the population running agentic coding tools is a fraction of that fraction.

A hierarchy within the hierarchy

Even among the elites living the frontier AI revolution there is a pecking order. Sol launched as a restricted preview for OpenAI's trusted partners and select organizations before broader rollout, making early access itself a status marker in AI circles. Fable was taken offline globally for nearly three weeks in June under U.S. export controls, while its more powerful sibling, Mythos, remains restricted to a small number of trusted organizations. The result is multiple tiers: free users, paid users, power users, preview users and an insider class testing capabilities the rest of the world can only read about.

Social acceptance and trust

The AI industry ultimately needs broad social permission for the transformation it is proposing: more data centers, deeper workplace automation and AI embedded in schools, government and daily life. Yet as adoption has increased, trust has fallen: Pew Research finds 63% of Americans say AI is advancing too quickly and only 16% expect it to benefit society over the next 20 years. The clearest gains are being captured by investors, tech giants and power users, while ordinary Americans are being asked to absorb disruption to jobs, energy and information flows.

What to watch next

The Trump administration's Labor Department published a national AI literacy framework in February aimed at helping workers "share in the prosperity that AI will create." OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft and Amazon pooled $500 million in June for RAISE US, a workforce retraining initiative led by former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb.

Basic literacy efforts can help but have limits: frontier users have better tools, earlier access, deeper technical context and hundreds of hours of trial-and-error with systems that change every few weeks.

Historical parallel and bottom line

A century ago, electrification produced a similar divide between Americans living in the modern age and those watching from the dark. By 1930, nearly 90% of urban homes had electricity compared with roughly 10% of farms; private utilities had little incentive to wire sparsely populated, unprofitable rural areas. The New Deal's Rural Electrification Administration and years of federal loans eventually bridged that gap.

AI's divide may be harder to close: frontier access is scarce and expensive, and even when tools are free many people do not know how to use them. The industry is betting on inevitability, but history shows technological revolutions also require legitimacy and broad social acceptance.
