OpenAI says its technology helps journalists deepen original reporting, make trusted content more useful and accessible, and build stronger relationships with readers, subscribers and advertisers.
Over the past year the company has continued collaborating with news organizations to determine how AI can be most useful — for example, by assisting with time-consuming tasks, enabling new reader experiences, and supporting more sustainable business models.
Areas where publishers apply AI
According to OpenAI, reporters, editors and business teams across the industry are using its technology for tasks such as:
- covering more ground in reporting;
- making decades of reporting searchable;
- delivering stories in new languages and formats;
- turning complex information into faster decision-making.
These tools are increasingly embedded across newsroom, product and business workflows.
Specific partnerships and support
OpenAI cites examples of continued engagement with the sector: it renewed support for the American Journalism Project, which encompasses a portfolio of dozens of publications across 38 states. The company also continues to support the Lenfest Institute for Journalism and WAN‑IFRA.
OpenAI emphasizes that people remain central to the work — from frontline journalism and editorial direction to key business decisions.
Other publisher uses
The announcement highlights that publishers are using AI in multiple ways to:
- support research and reporting;
- help audiences discover, explore and engage with trusted journalism in more useful and personalized ways;
- turn complex business data into actionable insights and enable teams to work more effectively.
These projects illustrate how AI can help journalists reclaim time, make trusted reporting easier to explore, surface deeper business insights and develop new growth sources.
Training and continued engagement
OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations to share learnings and use cases so that benefits can be more broadly understood and adopted. The company notes it has been investing in and partnering with the news industry for over three years, and says its work to support the industry’s mission is only beginning.
OpenAI plans to continue working with publishers, editors and journalists to build tools that support strong, sustainable news organizations and help more people engage with high-quality journalism.
Note: one of the news organizations participates in the Lenfest Institute AI Collaborative and Fellowship program.
