Meta has introduced an "incognito" AI chat mode in WhatsApp designed to let users have fully private conversations with the app's built-in artificial intelligence.
According to the company, the new mode relies on a so-called private compute technology that processes chat content inside a protected runtime environment. Meta says even it cannot access the content processed in that environment, meaning the company will not see what users discuss with the AI.
Key features of the capability, as described by Meta, include:
- Private incognito chats are temporary: the system does not store those conversations.
- Messages are set to disappear by default, so content is not retained long term.
- Processing occurs in an isolated, secure environment to which Meta claims it has no access.
Meta also stated it plans to add further security and privacy-focused features over time. In the coming months the company intends to introduce separate chat types protected by private compute, expanding the options available to users who want enhanced safeguards for AI interactions.
The announcement is aimed at encouraging users to engage with WhatsApp's AI features without fearing Meta access to or persistent storage of their conversations.
