A woman who says she was sexually abused as a child has filed a lawsuit in California against xAI, the company founded by Elon Musk, claiming that the firm’s AI chatbot Grok generated images based on child‑pornographic recordings of her and that those AI‑generated images spread on the social platform X.
In court papers the plaintiff is identified only as Jane Doe. The complaint states that she and several classmates were sexually abused when they were in primary school; the woman alleges she was raped multiple times by a man who also forced the recordings to be made. According to the filing, those recordings—made more than twenty years ago—have circulated online for a long time and were known to law enforcement and child‑protection agencies at the time.
The complaint alleges Grok produced images depicting the sexual abuse of children derived from the original recordings, that those images became public, and that they were stored in xAI’s databases. The plaintiff’s lawyer noted that law enforcement often applies digital ‘‘fingerprints’’ to child‑sexual‑abuse material so agencies can track where and when such files reappear; because the original images had such identifying data, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection was reportedly able to determine that the AI‑generated images on X depicted the plaintiff.
The lawsuit contends that xAI disregarded industry practices for preventing and handling sexual‑abuse content, which resulted in AI‑generated images depicting children’s sexual abuse appearing and circulating on X.
Elon Musk has previously said he was not aware of Grok producing images of ‘‘naked minors.’’ The company faced criticism after it emerged that Grok had generated large numbers of images that effectively ‘‘undressed’’ real people without consent, including sexualized deepfakes of adults and minors. In January, xAI announced that Grok would no longer generate such images.
Despite that pledge, the issue has persisted according to the filings: in late August xAI filed lawsuits against two users who are also subject to criminal proceedings, alleging they were responsible for creating similar material. xAI is seeking payment from those two men to cover litigation costs incurred from suits brought by victims against the company.
