Listen Labs, a startup that uses voice AI to conduct customer interviews and package findings into reports, signed a term sheet for a $125 million Series C round at a $1.5 billion valuation, with Menlo Ventures set to lead, several people familiar with the matter said. The company ultimately did not close that financing: it walked away from the signed term sheet, an uncommon step in venture finance.
The reported collapse of the round appears linked to acquisition discussions with Salesforce. Business Insider reported that Salesforce has held talks to acquire Listen Labs for roughly $2 billion. Those discussions are not finalized and may not result in a deal.
Financials and market positioning
Listen Labs is about three years old and generates roughly $30 million in annualized revenue, according to people familiar with the companies’ finances. That figure is said to be roughly three times the revenue of Simile, a competing startup that predicts human behavior.
In late July, Simile closed a $200 million Series B at a $2 billion valuation, a transaction that one person described as a possible new valuation benchmark for the category. Several venture investors told TechCrunch that if talks with Salesforce fail, they expect Listen Labs to return to the market targeting a $2 billion or higher valuation.
However, a source with experience negotiating exits to Salesforce cautioned that buying Listen Labs at about a 67-times revenue multiple could be deemed too expensive by the CRM giant.
Product, customers and competition
Listen Labs’ AI crafts survey questions and conducts audio or video interviews with customers; the recorded conversations are transformed into analyses, reports and PowerPoint-ready presentations similar to what human market researchers produce. The technology aims to reduce the cost and time of traditional market research, enabling companies to more rapidly understand customer reactions to product changes and iterate.
Customers named for Listen Labs include Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic and Sweetgreen. The startup is one of several using AI to disrupt customer research; others include Simile, Outset, Keplar and Aaru. Some platforms automate interviews with real people, while others, like Aaru and Simile, use synthetic approaches to model human behavior and predict responses without conducting interviews.
Founding and prior financing
Listen Labs was co-founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann — a former German national champion in competitive programming — and Alfred Wahlforss, who previously founded a staffing startup called Bemlo. The two met while pursuing master’s degrees at Harvard.
Earlier this year, in late January, Listen Labs announced a $69 million Series B led by Ribbit Capital, with returning backers including Sequoia, Conviction and Pear VC; that round valued the company at $500 million.
It remains uncertain whether the Salesforce discussions will conclude with an acquisition. Listen Labs, Salesforce, Menlo Ventures and Simile did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
