On Wednesday, Meta launched global paid subscription tiers under the Meta One brand for Instagram and Facebook. The lineup includes two Meta AI plans priced at $7.99 and $19.99 per month, and a Creator Pro tier priced at $49.99.
What the tiers offer
- The consumer tiers unlock features such as anonymous Story viewing, deeper analytics, custom themes and additional privacy controls.
- The Meta AI tiers offer faster responses, higher usage limits, and more advanced reasoning capabilities.
The rollout comes a week after Meta carried out a workforce reduction of about 8,000 employees and announced plans to commit $125 to $145 billion to AI infrastructure.
Why this matters
The shift toward subscription models among social platforms stems from limits to ad revenue. X and Snap adopted paid options years ago because their advertising businesses could not sustain them alone. Meta differs in that it monetizes over three billion users and operates with industry-leading advertising margins. Even so, those ad revenues are insufficient to underwrite the massive capital expenditures required for AI compute at scale.
Meta’s introduction of paid Meta One packages indicates that even the strongest ad business on Earth cannot fully fund the next decade of AI infrastructure on advertising dollars alone. Offering paid consumer and AI tiers is part of a broader industry response to the high costs of building and running large-scale AI systems.
