Meta announced that it will permit third‑party AI agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging. The company made the announcement alongside news of its new AI‑focused subscription plans, and said the change simplifies how businesses connect customers via WhatsApp.
What changes
Previously, developers had to move between multiple tools and services—such as the Developer Console, Meta Business Manager, the API reference, and an editor—to configure WhatsApp Business. Now they can describe the required steps to a preferred AI agent and have that agent perform the setup through conversation.
This capability is enabled by the new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that directly links coding AI agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Tasks the AI agent can perform
According to Meta, the AI agent can automate much of the busywork involved in onboarding to WhatsApp Business, including:
- creating the company’s WhatsApp Business account;
- adding and verifying the company phone number;
- registering the business for access to the Cloud API;
- checking the business’ Terms of Service.
Businesses can also ask the AI agent to create or edit messaging templates, test messages and webhooks, and monitor issues that might previously have failed silently—such as Terms of Service compliance, payment method status, and Business Verification.
Relation to other MCP servers and industry context
The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP expands Meta’s existing set of MCP servers, which have been used for ad management, app configuration monitoring, and other social technologies. Meta noted that its Meta Social Technologies MCP can be used in parallel during setup to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and help troubleshoot errors.
Other technology companies also provide MCP servers that let AI agents interact securely with their services, including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft.
Why it matters
The change can reduce administrative overhead for developers and businesses adopting WhatsApp Business and speed up the deployment of customer messaging channels. At the same time, enabling automated AI access to external services raises questions about permissions, data privacy, and error handling that organizations will need to manage.
