Meta has introduced Muse Image, a new AI-powered image generator developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company’s dedicated artificial intelligence unit. The project was internally codenamed Mango.
Availability
Meta says Muse Image will be available at no cost through the Meta AI app and will also be integrated into Instagram Stories and WhatsApp. The company states the model is free for “everyday creation,” but usage beyond a certain limit will require a paid Meta subscription.
Capabilities and use cases
Muse offers many of the features common to modern image-generation models: creating entirely new images in a variety of styles, often playful or cartoonish, and editing existing photos via prompts. Meta highlighted several specific use cases:
- Presets: prebuilt prompts intended to spark ideas for users who struggle to create their own prompts.
- Custom ads: Muse can be used to mock up ad visuals and creative variations.
- Interior and marketplace previews: demonstrations show users testing how a used couch might look in their garage; this capability is intended to tie into Facebook Marketplace.
- Prompt-based image editing: the model can remove unwanted elements from photos (for example, a photobomber) or generate images from prompts such as functional-looking QR codes.
Instagram effects and integrations
Meta is also rolling out a set of new AI-driven effects for Instagram Stories that rely on Muse. These include various customizable filters and tools to modify existing images.
Pricing and roadmap
While Muse Image is free for everyday use, Meta warns that heavy use will trigger the company’s subscription requirements. Meta also confirmed that Muse Video, an AI video generation tool, is already in development.
Context within Meta’s AI efforts
Over the past year Meta has launched several AI apps and services, including an assistant called Creator and an app named Pocket that can be used to create simple games. The company has faced criticism for what some describe as a nebulous AI strategy, yet it remains on track to invest heavily in AI infrastructure this year as it expands its product suite.
