Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk has announced a collaboration with AI company Anthropic aimed at accelerating drug development. The partnership intends to apply artificial intelligence to various stages of research and development to shorten timelines and improve efficiency in advancing new compounds and therapies.
Why this matters
Novo previously established a leading position in the GLP-1 market, driven largely by its Ozempic injectable, which became closely associated with GLP-1 treatments. However, the company has recently lost ground: its shares have fallen about 20% over the past year. In response, Novo launched organizational and cultural changes to address the setback.
The new collaboration with Anthropic is part of a broader strategy to leverage AI to enhance drug discovery and development speed—an effort that could be critical for regaining competitiveness.
Industry context
Other major pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly, Merck and Roche, have also invested in AI. To date, those investments have primarily been used to boost workplace productivity and to design clinical trials, rather than to directly discover new drugs.
