British neocloud Nscale is buying software startup Anyscale, which helps companies scale AI workloads across data centers and servers. Bloomberg reported the purchase price as $1.65 billion, citing an anonymous source.
What Anyscale does and why it matters
Anyscale was founded by the team behind the open-source Project Ray distributed Python framework. The company originally built a platform to run projects requiring large amounts of compute. After the launch of GPT-3 in 2022 and the subsequent surge of interest in AI, Anyscale pivoted toward services for scaling and serving large language models (LLMs), training, data curation, inferencing, reinforcement learning and other compute-intensive tasks.
Anyscale’s platform is built around Ray and provides developer tools, observability and orchestration for distributed workloads.
How the deal fits Nscale’s strategy
The acquisition complements Nscale’s vertical approach to serving compute needs. The neocloud has already developed business lines across energy, data centers and orchestration software; adding Anyscale brings workload management and scaling into that stack. In a statement, Anyscale said that together the two companies can co-design the software layer and the underlying infrastructure in ways that would be harder to achieve by optimizing a single layer alone.
Financial and operational details
Nscale raised $2 billion in a Series C round in March, which valued the company at $14.6 billion. Its investors include Nvidia, Nokia, Blue Owl, Dell and Norwegian industrial group Aker. The company has been deploying that capital and various debt financings to secure compute and data-center partnerships with Microsoft, British Telecom and Nordcraft.
Anyscale was valued at $1.38 billion in a 2022 Series C round. The startup reported that its revenue grew by 70% in its most recent quarter compared with the preceding sequential quarter.
Nscale said Anyscale will continue to operate under its own brand and keep serving its existing customers. Approximately 200 Anyscale employees will join Nscale as part of the deal.
Why this matters
The acquisition underscores a broader market trend: cloud and infrastructure providers are moving to control more of the software layer that sits above compute resources, aiming to capture a larger share of customers’ AI spending and to better optimize the full technology stack.
