ChatGPT became widely known after it was made available to the public at the end of 2022, popularizing AI by offering a simple, conversation-based interface that anyone could use.
The Financial Times, citing more than a dozen current and former OpenAI employees, reports that the company is rethinking ChatGPT’s fundamental design. According to these sources, OpenAI aims to evolve the current chat-focused experience into a "super-app" that would act as a gateway to AI agents and coding tools.
A senior company employee told the newspaper that “chat is dead,” and that ChatGPT will become the entry point for AI agents and coding tools — identified as major revenue sources for OpenAI. For example, the Codex coding tool already offers multiple subscription tiers, including enterprise options, which bring in substantial income for the company.
Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s chief financial officer, mentioned the idea of an “AI super-app” in a blog post in April, describing a product that would combine Codex, agent-related capabilities and other best-in-class features. At the time it sounded possible that this might be a separate product from ChatGPT; the Financial Times’ reporting now indicates that the chatbot itself is likely the focus of the planned overhaul.
Details remain unclear, but the Financial Times says downloadable apps for ChatGPT could play a significant role in the redesign. The report also notes that OpenAI is considering removing explicit command inputs, betting that an upgraded ChatGPT will be able to infer user intent without commands.
While the timeline is not fully confirmed, the newspaper’s sources suggest the transition could begin within weeks. Overall, ChatGPT appears poised for a substantial transformation: the conversational interface that introduced many users to AI could be replaced or augmented by a broader platform centered on agents and advanced coding services.
Why this matters
- The shift indicates OpenAI is moving revenue focus beyond conversational use toward service- and tool-oriented offerings.
- Integrating Codex and agent features may be particularly attractive to enterprise customers and subscription models.
- Eliminating commands in favor of intent-based operation would change how users interact with the product and could reshape user experience.
According to the Financial Times reporting, OpenAI has not yet issued a detailed public confirmation of the planned changes.
