OpenAI announced three new plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex tailored to K–12 (primary and secondary) educators, college faculty, and college students. The plugins are designed to make agentic capabilities available in the context of the course materials and tools chosen by users, enabling multi-step, context-aware work rather than single question–answer interactions.
The plugins are available through ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments. Each plugin bundles applications, role-specific skills, instructions, and common workflows so teachers and students can start working immediately without manually composing complex prompts.
Why this matters now
OpenAI frames the change in AI capability as a shift from simple Q&A tools to systems that can reason across contexts, use other tools, and execute complex tasks. That evolution affects what preparedness looks like for school and work and raises questions about how institutions manage privacy, security, and oversight.

K–12 Educator plugin: Built with input from K–12 teachers, this plugin supports lesson planning and classroom material creation using teachers’ existing documents, course content, and tools. It can generate differentiated resources, design interactive visualizations, and surface actionable insights. It also integrates with Learning Commons, a philanthropic organization that funds and builds public AI datasets and resources, enabling alignment with local academic standards and finer-grained learning components while leaving pedagogical decisions, grading and agentic actions under teacher control.

College Educator plugin: Aimed at faculty, this plugin assists with course design, instruction and academic planning. Instructors can update syllabi, create interactive websites or multimedia assessments, adapt materials for diverse learners, or package content for learning management systems (LMS). By connecting calendars, documents and approved tools, faculty can maintain context across teaching, research and everyday tasks without recreating that context for each project.

College Student plugin: Designed for university students across majors, regions and levels of AI fluency, this plugin helps students turn their current coursework into more personalized learning experiences. Students can work with a guided tutor, practice challenging concepts, and create study guides, quizzes, flashcards and interactive visual explanations from chosen sources. The plugin draws on learning science to emphasize deeper understanding and stronger study habits.
Institutional control, security and availability
OpenAI emphasizes deploying these tools in institution-managed, secure environments. ChatGPT Edu, introduced in 2024, provides managed workspaces with enterprise-level privacy, security and administrative controls. ChatGPT for Teachers, introduced in 2025, is free for verified U.S. K–12 educators and districts and includes educator-grade protections and compliance features. School and district leaders can claim their domain to bring educators into a shared workspace with greater oversight, including protections to support FERPA requirements and a data privacy agreement.
Partnerships and training initiatives
OpenAI highlights partnerships with educators and organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). OpenAI is a founding partner of the National Academy for AI Instruction, a five-year initiative aiming to equip 400,000 K–12 educators—roughly one in ten U.S. teachers—with AI skills and leadership in classroom AI use.
The OpenAI Academy, in partnership with the Walton Family Foundation, is organizing free, in-person hands-on workshops for more than 1,600 K–12 teachers, administrators and district leaders across eight U.S. cities to build practical AI skills for classroom challenges. Through OpenAI Education for Countries, the company works with national leaders; for example, in Estonia ChatGPT Edu now reaches more than 20,000 students and 4,600 teachers alongside a longitudinal research initiative with the University of Tartu and Stanford University.
Usage patterns and research findings
OpenAI reports that more than 200 million young adults ages 18–24 now use ChatGPT weekly. It also notes a widening global "capability overhang," the gap between what AI tools can do and how people actually use them. Among college-age users, advanced student users still leverage ChatGPT capabilities roughly 90–99% less than power users, indicating substantial room to deepen AI skills.
According to OpenAI, structured access can help close that gap: across ChatGPT Edu deployments, students develop more advanced usage patterns over time and outperform free users across nearly every capability—particularly in analysis, calculation and learning. Since ChatGPT Edu’s 2024 launch, OpenAI has partnered with K–12 districts including Houston Independent School District (Texas), Fairfax (Virginia) and Fulton (Georgia), and with hundreds of college and university campuses, including The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania; The University of Texas at Austin; and the California State University system.
Student communities and researcher support
OpenAI also launched the OpenAI Student Collective, a student-led community for learning, building and shaping AI on campus. Applications are open for students to become Campus Leads and lead peer-led experiences and hands-on projects. Partnerships with platforms such as Handshake aim to connect students’ skills to internships and early-career opportunities.
For academic researchers, the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program provides eligible researchers with 12 months of free Pro-level access to ChatGPT Work and Codex to pursue ambitious scientific work in a secure workspace.
Outlook for the school year
The educator and student plugins are available in ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments. OpenAI says it will continue building tools, training and research in collaboration with the education community through the school year, with the stated goal of helping students and educators develop agency: the ability to direct AI tools toward meaningful goals, exercise judgment, solve difficult problems and turn ideas into practice. Institutions retain control over which tools and permissions are available to their users.
