Photon raises $4.5M seed to build an agent-first platform that runs over messaging apps

Photon, an AI startup that helps developers build agents that operate over messaging platforms such as iMessage and WhatsApp, has raised $4.5 million in a seed funding round to develop its products. The company staged an intentionally theatrical “app funeral” in San Francisco on September 17 — including speeches and a symbolic coffin for app icons — to underline its belief that agents will eventually replace standalone mobile apps.

Why messaging-based agents?

Photon’s core thesis is that users increasingly prefer not to install new apps and instead want agent experiences that run inside the messaging services they already use. To serve that need, Photon provides a toolkit for developers that includes a unified API, a b extensible channel framework, a command-line interface (CLI) and an observability suite, enabling agents to operate across iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS or RCS, email, voice and other channels.

Origins and product evolution

The idea began when co-founders Daniel Tian (CEO) and Ryan Zhu (CTO) were students building consumer apps, often at hackathons. They repeatedly encountered the same discovery problem: getting users to find new apps. By creating an agent that worked inside iMessage, they realized they could reach users through an app those users already opened daily.

Tian built a bot that would reply to his friends on iMessage on his behalf. When the team open-sourced that technology on GitHub, thousands of developers adopted it, prompting the founders to focus on the approach full-time. Tian left the University of Pennsylvania M&T program, and Zhu left high school and later became a visiting student at MIT’s Media Lab.

Photon says the open-source version still accounts for 98% of its usage.

Hosted offering and compliance

In April the founders launched a managed, subscription-based platform. The hosted service advertises 99.95% uptime and meets SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA requirements, positioning it for regulated use cases such as healthcare. Photon reports over 40,000 developer sign-ups and says it already has paying customers; usage beyond 10 users requires moving out of the free tier to one of three paid tiers.

The company declined to share total revenue figures but stated that revenue has grown 10× in the past four months, churn is under 3%, and messaging volume increased 5× in the last month alone.

Customers and integrations

Customers using Photon include Corgi Insurance; Boardy (a social introductions app); Gen Z dating platform Ditto; business banking platform Rho; finance AI assistant Fliptexts; AI email client Slashy; and others building agents for fintech, consumer AI and other verticals.

Photon’s technology integration partners include Vercel (Eve and ChatSDK) and Nous Research, whose Hermes agent uses Photon as its default iMessage layer. Photon also underlies Tencent’s QClaw and NanoClaw. The company has seen framework and infrastructure integrations across LangChain, Mastra, Convex, Render, Railway and Telnyx, among others.

Funding and reach

Photon’s seed round was co-led by Gradient and A*, with participation from Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, Karman and other angel investors. Across both the hosted and open-source versions, Daniel Tian estimates the technology reaches millions of end users.

Roadmap: agent-to-agent plumbing

Today Photon focuses on agents that connect with humans, but Tian sees potential in agent-to-agent (A-to-A) communication as an expansion path. In his view, agents will be able to discover and engage other agents to perform specific tasks — for example, an assistant arranging travel could bring in a flight-booking agent or a hotel-booking agent — resulting in an A-to-A-to-P (agent-to-agent-to-person) ecosystem.

Photon’s recent $4.5 million raise and its growing developer base position the company to push on both product development and integrations as it pursues the vision of messaging-centric agents replacing many standalone apps.
