Queue startup debuts largely autonomous pharmacy for dispensing prescription drugs

U.S. startup Queue has presented a platform that it says operates as one of the world’s first largely autonomous pharmacies and is capable of dispensing prescription drugs. The development was reported by Interesting Engineering.

How the system works

Queue’s platform operates with medications kept in sealed bottles. Robotics and machine vision perform storage, inventory, dosing, inspection and the final assembly of prescriptions. The workflow integrates the preparation, multiple automated checks and the handover to the patient into a single process.

Capacity and safety features

The system currently handles roughly 250 different preparations, which the company states covers the majority of commonly prescribed medicines. Queue says the platform includes several automated safety and verification steps and was designed to reduce dispensing errors.

Economic and deployment claims

According to Queue’s calculations, the robotic pharmacy could cut dispensing costs by as much as 96 percent. The modular design is intended to allow deployment in a wide range of environments, potentially including locations without on-site staff.

Testing

Queue is already testing the new system in commercial conditions at a U.S. site. The company positions the technology as a way to lower operating costs, improve dispensing accuracy and expand pharmacy presence through automation.

Why this matters

Automated pharmacies that can dispense prescription medications may alter the structure of pharmaceutical services by reducing manual labor and operating expenses, but they also raise questions about safety, regulation and patient interaction.
