Anthropic announced that Rahul Patil has been appointed Chief Technology Officer. In this role Patil will lead the company's engineering organization across product, compute, infrastructure, inference, data science and security to scale Claude for growing enterprise demand.
Background on the new CTO
Rahul Patil brings more than 20 years of experience building and operating industry-grade infrastructure. Immediately prior to joining Anthropic he served as CTO of Stripe, where he led the technical organization that supports millions of businesses and processes more than a trillion dollars annually. Earlier in his career he held senior engineering leadership positions at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, gaining expertise in designing reliable, scalable systems for mission-critical business use.
Why this matters
Anthropic is focused on scaling Claude for enterprise customers, and Patil's hire signals a reinforcement of the company's commitment to robust infrastructure and reliability. Daniela Amodei, co-founder and President of Anthropic, noted that the company now serves over 300,000 business customers and said Patil's experience will be important for building systems that enterprises can depend on.
Organizational changes
As part of the transition, Sam McCandlish, one of Anthropic's co-founders and the outgoing CTO, has moved into a new role as Chief Architect. In that position McCandlish will concentrate more deeply on large-scale model training, continue to lead pretraining efforts, and expand his responsibilities to include research productivity and reinforcement‑learning (RL) infrastructure.
Comments from leadership
On joining Anthropic, Rahul Patil said: “I'm thrilled to join Anthropic at this pivotal moment in AI development. Anthropic’s brilliance in both research and products, and their conscientious approach to pushing the boundaries of what's possible feels like the most important work I could be doing right now—I personally can't think of a greater calling and responsibility.”
Daniela Amodei added: “Building AI systems that people can trust has been central to our work as we've grown to serve over 300,000 business customers. Rahul brings a proven track record in building and scaling robust infrastructure that businesses can depend on as we work to make Claude the leading intelligence platform for enterprises.”
Next steps
Anthropic's stated aim with these leadership changes is to strengthen technical capacity where it matters for enterprise deployment: compute resources, inference performance, data management and security. Patil's experience with large-scale financial processing and cloud infrastructure is intended to support Claude's further expansion into enterprise markets.
