Samsung and Google have collaborated on a new smart glasses concept that avoids the head‑mounted transparent displays used in earlier attempts. The prototype—referred to for now as “Eyewear”—is planned to reach the market this autumn in a limited number of countries; Hungary is not included in the initial rollout. The device was shown at Samsung’s exclusive London event.

Concept: voice and AI at the center

James Choi, the global head of R&D for the product family, said the design brief deliberately excluded a transparent display in front of the eye. Instead, the device relies primarily on voice: it features a built‑in microphone and speakers integrated into the temples, enabling natural spoken interaction. An artificial intelligence system handles speech understanding, so users can talk to it conversationally rather than relying on fixed keywords.

The glasses also carry high‑resolution cameras on the front edges that continuously monitor the environment; their video feed is processed by AI. This combination lets the device link visual input with voice interaction for contextual responses.

Capabilities and use cases

Demonstrated and intended uses include:

  • listening to music and handling phone calls;
  • reading incoming messages and emails aloud;
  • surfacing nearby stores or restaurants and their offerings, and placing orders without touching the phone;
  • turn‑by‑turn guidance and navigation cues presented via voice;
  • real‑time translation of signage and nearby text, using gaze direction to determine what to translate;
  • capturing photos and video with the built‑in cameras.

The glasses are not standalone: they must pair with a smartphone and use the phone’s compute and connectivity as a communication channel. Recorded footage from the cameras is forwarded to the phone rather than stored locally.

Design, comfort and battery life

A major design goal was to produce a lightweight, comfortable frame that resembles a conventional eyeglass and can withstand everyday wear and incidental impacts. To keep mass and bulk low, the device omits an integrated display and the heavier electronics that would require.

According to Samsung, the glasses provide about nine hours of active use when the cameras are used. For voice‑only use, battery life can extend to multiple days. A special charging case contains an auxiliary battery that can fully recharge the glasses seven times without needing to connect the case to mains power.

Prescription lenses can be fitted into the frame and a sunglasses variant is available, making the product suitable for users who wear corrective eyewear.

Unknowns and limitations

Although the voice‑centric approach is novel in this product category, real‑world viability remains to be proven. Extended testing is needed to evaluate microphone and speaker performance in noisy urban environments, and camera performance in low light.

Price and full availability details have not been released. James Choi stressed that Samsung and Google are committed to the concept and are already working on a second generation, indicating this is intended as a long‑term product line rather than a one‑off experiment.

Competitive landscape

Other companies, including Meta, Asus, Lenovo and Epson, are also active in the smart glasses space. So far, according to hands‑on impressions referenced in the announcement, none of the competing products has yet been fully convincing in live use. Samsung and Google’s display‑free, AI‑driven approach reduces some manufacturing complexity on paper, but whether it can deliver mass‑market appeal remains an open question.
