Shopify announced that browser-based AI agents can now finish purchases on merchants’ Shopify sites, extending their prior abilities beyond product search and cart additions. The company expanded WebMCP (Web Model Context Protocol) support to include the checkout flow, including Shop Pay.
What the agents can do
The update adds three new tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. Using these, agents can:
- inspect a checkout screen (get_checkout),
- modify checkout details such as the customer address or delivery option (update_checkout),
- and, after buyer authorization, submit the order (complete_checkout).
Shopify says WebMCP lets agents use structured APIs for checkout interactions instead of relying on screenshots or scraping HTML pages intended for human viewing.
Technical context and standards
Shopify already provides a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for server-to-server agent operations. WebMCP is aimed at agents that operate inside the buyer’s browser. Both MCP and WebMCP leverage Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which standardizes product search, discovery, cart building, and checkout processes.
Availability and partners
The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, Gil Greenberg — a staff product manager working on agentic commerce at Shopify — said in a post on X on September 28, 2026. Greenberg noted that if an agent operates in the buyer’s browser, developers should use the WebMCP tools provided on storefront and checkout to complete orders efficiently, rather than navigating HTML built for humans.
Well-known AI agents such as Muse and Instinct already have direct partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce; the Instinct partnership was announced on the same day as Shopify’s WebMCP checkout update.
Why this matters
While some retailers, including Amazon (and reportedly Adidas), have blocked AI agents from purchasing on users’ behalf, Shopify has moved to enable browser-based agents to complete transactions with buyer authorization. By integrating checkout into WebMCP and building on UCP, Shopify aims to provide structured APIs that help ensure accurate commerce data, required disclosures, and orderly handoffs during automated purchases.
