SpaceX announces bond sale as shares dip after IPO surge

SpaceX has announced its first issuance of unsecured bonds, aiming to raise roughly $20 billion to repay bridge financing tied to its recent IPO and for general corporate purposes.

SpaceX announces bond sale as shares dip after IPO surge

Only days after its June 12 public debut, SpaceX is moving into the bond market: the company on Monday announced plans for its first issuance of unsecured bonds and reported roughly $100.8 billion in cash on hand.

According to the announcement, proceeds from the bond sale will be used to repay bridge financing tied to the IPO and for other general corporate purposes. Market expectations put the target amount raised at about $20 billion.

The June 12 IPO and stock movements

SpaceX’s June 12 IPO ranked among the largest recent public offerings: including the exercise of the overallotment option, the deal mobilized nearly $86 billion. The transaction elevated Elon Musk to the status of the world’s first trillionaire.

Share prices climbed sharply after the listing, briefly pushing SpaceX’s market value above that of Amazon. Earlier, the company’s market capitalization had surpassed Broadcom, Meta Platforms, and Elon Musk’s other company, Tesla.

On the day the bond issuance was announced, however, the stock opened down about 6.5 percent.

Why issue bonds now?

SpaceX says the bond proceeds will partly repay IPO-related short-term financing and partly fund general corporate needs. Behind the financing is the company’s large-scale artificial intelligence agenda: in the long term, SpaceX is exploring projects that could include building data centers deployed in space.

Implications and market perspective

The bond offering provides SpaceX with financing flexibility to address IPO-related obligations and to fund its ambitious technology and infrastructure plans. The market’s negative reaction to the announcement, reflected in the share price decline, may reflect reassessment of risk or liquidity needs following the rapid gains around the IPO.
