SpaceXAI has released its latest language model, Grok 4.5 — the company’s first major model launch since going public several weeks ago.
In a blog post published on Wednesday, SpaceXAI described Grok 4.5 as a multipurpose workhorse intended to handle the routine tasks the AI industry often aims to automate: coding and app development, office and clerical work, research, writing, and other forms of knowledge work.
Performance and efficiency
SpaceXAI claims Grok 4.5 achieves “twice greater token efficiency” than other leading models. If that efficiency holds up in practical use, it could be a significant advantage given the rising concerns among AI consumers about token costs.
The company released benchmark metrics on Wednesday showing Grok 4.5 to be competitive with other top models, although the published results do not position it as unequivocally best-in-class.
Elon Musk’s assessment and availability
Elon Musk, founder of SpaceXAI, posted on his social media platform X (a subsidiary of SpaceXAI) that, based on strong positive feedback from beta customers, SpaceXAI will make Grok 4.5 available to the public “tomorrow.” Musk characterized the model as comparable to Anthropic’s Opus — a large language model designed for intensive, complex tasks — stating it is an “Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost.”
He later added that the company’s internal assessment places Grok 4.5 as roughly comparable to Opus 4.7 but much faster, and that the combination of capability, speed and lower cost is what makes it competitive.
Pricing
SpaceXAI says Grok 4.5 is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. This would be competitively priced if the model’s capabilities match the company’s claims.
For comparison, Anthropic’s Opus 4.7 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. OpenAI’s pricing varies by model: Sol, its most expensive tier, is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, while Luna, its least expensive, costs $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens.
Market context
Grok 4.5’s release comes amid a busy week for AI model launches. OpenAI plans to release GPT 5.6 on Thursday; OpenAI has described that model as its “strongest model yet,” and its release had previously been constrained by the Trump administration over security concerns.
Ultimately, Grok 4.5’s impact will depend on whether its claimed token efficiency and performance materialize in real-world applications and how users evaluate its cost-to-benefit ratio against competing models.
