Spotify announced in a Wednesday statement that, beginning in mid‑September, performer profiles representing artificial intelligence–generated personas will receive a dedicated label on the platform.
Where will the label appear?
The “AI Persona” label will be displayed on the artist profile itself, in search results and within playlists. The tag is intended to make it clear to listeners when a profile represents an AI‑created identity.
Who can apply the label?
Artists may self‑report when they use an AI‑created identity. In addition, Spotify says it will apply the label based on its own reviews when a profile’s name, images and public presence depict a photorealistic, AI‑generated person.
What are the consequences of the label?
Music from labeled profiles will be excluded by default from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations. Such tracks will reach listeners automatically only if those listeners follow the profile. Spotify frames this policy as a way to prioritize real human artists.
The label indicates whether the performer behind a profile is a real person; it does not signify whether the music itself was produced with artificial intelligence. Spotify plans to provide information about AI tools used in music creation through other features.
What happens next?
Spotify said users increasingly want to know whether they are listening to a real performer, so in the coming months the platform will let listeners report profiles they believe depict AI‑generated performers.
Why this matters
The measure is intended to increase transparency on the streaming platform and to elevate human artists within editorial and algorithmic systems. It also affects discovery and reach, since labeled profiles will be less likely to appear to listeners who have not followed them.
