TikTok announced on Monday that it is rolling out an AI-powered Shopping Assistant and a one-click in-app checkout that allow users to discover products and buy directly from brands without leaving the app.
What the AI assistant does
According to the company, the new Shopping Assistant is a conversational AI designed to help users find and purchase products. TikTok says the assistant understands conversational context, remembers users’ preferences and needs during an interaction, and provides real-time, AI-driven guidance on product details, shipping, sizing, availability, and assistance with completing purchases.
The one-click checkout
The new checkout feature enables users to make purchases from a brand directly from their For You feed (the app’s main algorithm-driven video feed) with a single click. The aim is to shorten the path from discovery to transaction and keep more of the buying process on TikTok.
Why it matters
Combining a shopping assistant with direct payments could allow TikTok to capture more of users’ shopping journeys and more transaction value without sending users to external sites. TikTok also appears to be aiming to keep users on its platform for product-related questions, reducing the likelihood they will consult outside AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Partners and integrations
TikTok said these features are being developed in partnership with commerce platforms and payment providers, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe. The collaborations are intended to broaden in-app commerce capabilities beyond the company’s existing marketplace.
Expansion of TikTok’s commerce strategy
While TikTok Shop — the app’s in-house marketplace — has been the primary engine behind TikTok’s e-commerce push, the new features extend the strategy beyond that single hub. Instead of relying solely on TikTok Shop to drive purchases, the company is embedding shopping tools more directly across the wider app experience, including the For You feed.
Numbers and dates
- TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023.
- Market research firm eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce.
- In TikTok’s recent Economic Impact Report, the company said platform activity helped generate $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses and that 54 million Americans reported purchasing a product after watching a TikTok video.
Implications
The new capabilities are likely to increase TikTok’s influence over shopping behavior and social commerce by making discovery, information and purchase steps more seamless within the app. The move also raises competitive pressure on external AI services and payment providers and could prompt questions around regulation and data handling for transaction-related information.
