Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, told an interview that surging memory-chip prices linked to the expansion of artificial intelligence are likely to force Apple to raise its consumer prices, according to n-tv.
Cook said that a price increase now appears unavoidable. He explained that the industry has been under pressure for months because large-scale buildouts of AI-focused data centers have strained memory-chip capacity, leading to significant price increases on the global market. The CEO did not specify when the price increases would occur, how large they would be, or which product categories would be affected.
Apple traditionally holds its next major product event in the autumn, timed with the launch of a new iPhone generation. Bloomberg has reported that Apple could expand its lineup this year with a foldable-display iPhone. To date, Apple has been able to keep consumer prices relatively stable largely thanks to long-term supplier contracts.
Cook emphasized that the company is doing everything it can to mitigate the substantial cost increases, but that the current situation is not sustainable in the long term. Apple has previously signaled that rising memory prices could force countermeasures, which implied possible increases in consumer prices.
Apple is not alone: several computer manufacturers and video-game console sellers have already raised prices, and other large electronics companies have said they cannot absorb higher chip costs indefinitely without passing some of the burden on to consumers. Although chipmakers are attempting to expand capacity, those projects are time-consuming, and manufacturers are currently prioritizing production of memory types that serve data centers.
Cook also addressed China’s role: China has memory manufacturers with significant state support, while U.S. companies face strict restrictions on cooperation with those Chinese players. When asked whether those rules should be relaxed, Cook said that in his view all options should be considered, and decisions should take the entire supply chain into account.
Why this matters
Rising memory-chip prices affect more than Apple: they can ripple through supply chains and consumer prices across the electronics industry. The growing demand from AI-driven data centers is tightening the memory market, and because capacity expansion is slow, pressure on prices may persist in the short to medium term. That helps explain why major consumer-electronics manufacturers are preparing for potential price adjustments.
