The British government and Google announced on Tuesday a jointly funded trial, Operation Blue Skies, aimed at lowering the climate impact of aircraft contrails by slightly altering flight altitudes over the busy North Atlantic Shanwick flight information region that links Europe and North America.
Funding and schedule
The programme has a total budget of £5 million (about HUF 2.1 billion), of which the UK government will provide £2.65 million (approximately HUF 1.1 billion). Tests are planned for the periods when contrails form most frequently: across the winter seasons of 2026–2027 and 2027–2028. In each season the trial will run for 20–40 days, focusing mainly on less congested days.
Why this matters
Aviation accounts for more than 2.5 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, but its overall climate effect is larger because of other emitted gases and of contrails. Researchers involved in the programme say contrails can represent about one third of aviation’s total climate impact. Paul Hodgson, the programme’s technical lead, noted that the Shanwick region is responsible for roughly five percent of global warming due to contrails, making it a suitable area for testing.
Contrails are composed mainly of ice and soot particles and can trap heat in the atmosphere, increasing warming.
Method: AI-driven meteorology and flight-altitude tweaks
Google will use artificial intelligence to analyse meteorological data and identify zones where contrail formation risk is higher. Where the AI indicates elevated risk, small changes in cruising altitude will be tested to see if contrail formation can be avoided.
The trial will monitor commercial flights over the North Atlantic. Results will be analysed by Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge, and the UK Met Office will use the findings to develop forecasts needed to identify conditions favourable to contrail formation.
Longer-term goals
The experiment aims not only to determine whether contrail impacts can be reduced locally but also to assess whether the approach could work at global scale. Kemal Armada, Google’s product lead, said in a press statement that the question is no longer whether we can reduce contrail impacts, but whether that can be achieved globally — and that this trial is an important step toward answering that question.
