Vitézy Dávid, Hungary’s Minister of Transport and Investment, visited the ÖBB National Control Centre in Vienna together with Andreas Matthä, Chief Executive Officer of Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB). The control centre, located beside Vienna’s main railway station, oversees Austria’s long-distance train operations.
During the visit the minister observed that Austrian systems are notably more automated than those used in Hungary. He pointed out that when dispatchers implement changes, those updates propagate much faster nationwide—from operator apps to passenger information displays—resulting in more timely interventions and consistent passenger information.
The ÖBB CEO said the company is currently working on introducing artificial intelligence to help enable faster interventions, reduce delays and improve traffic management. Vitézy noted that Hungarian railway professionals are as committed as their Austrian counterparts; the key difference, he said, lies in the sophistication of the systems and the level of automation.
Vitézy singled out as particularly positive the large monitor in the Austrian control centre that displays delay statistics for every line, giving staff clear operational guidance. He criticised his predecessor, Lázár János, for previously restricting the public release of delay statistics in Hungary.
While Vitézy inspected the control centre, other members of the official delegation took part in diplomatic meetings: the delegation visited the Polish and then the Austrian prime minister and head of state, according to the report. After the visits, the full delegation returned to Budapest by train.
Why this matters
The visit highlights that effective traffic management depends not only on professional commitment but also on the technical maturity of control systems and the speed of data flow. ÖBB’s move toward AI-driven tools and centralized, real-time delay displays offers an operational advantage that, Vitézy argues, the Hungarian rail network should aim to adopt.
