An influx of investment into AI-related stocks pushed the Nasdaq to a record closing level on Monday. Investors are watching Big Tech’s third-quarter earnings due this month, which has heightened interest in technology names.
Notable gainers
Several companies associated with artificial intelligence moved higher during the session: SpaceX, Nvidia, Meta, and Microsoft all posted gains. One investor told CNBC the trading resembled an “inverse bond trade,” summarizing the action as: “It’s buy tech, sell everything else.”
Demand for compute and the Fed’s dilemma
According to reporting, demand for computing capacity is strong enough that hyperscalers remain undeterred by higher borrowing costs. That creates a dilemma for the US Federal Reserve: the AI investment boom is contributing to inflation at the same time that rising interest rates are beginning to restrain activity elsewhere in the economy.
Barclays’ global chairman of research told The New York Times the Fed may have to “hurt the part of the economy that is more rate sensitive,” indicating policymakers could need to slow rate-sensitive sectors to rein in inflation.
Why this matters
The Nasdaq’s record close reflects investors’ optimistic pricing of AI-driven growth prospects, but it also highlights tensions between rapid tech investment and monetary tightening. Market participants will be paying close attention to upcoming Big Tech third-quarter results for signals about whether the current rally is sustainable and how the economic trade-offs will evolve.
