Under a new agreement, Airbnb is providing broader access for its engineering and product teams to OpenAI frontier models, including GPT‑6 Astra. Access is made available through OpenAI APIs and Amazon Bedrock.
Background: existing collaboration and prior models
This expansion builds on an ongoing collaboration between Airbnb and OpenAI. Airbnb has previously used OpenAI Codex and models from the GPT‑5.6 family — named Sol, Terra, and Luna — to power internal AI assistants and remote AI agents that support software development tasks.
What the new access enables
The agreement broadens Airbnb’s ability to use OpenAI’s frontier models in development and product work. The timing coincides with accelerating adoption of GPT‑6 Astra among developers, builders, and enterprises, many of which had already benefited from the improved price‑performance and efficiency of GPT‑5.6 Terra and Luna.
Early results with GPT‑6 Astra
Airbnb’s initial use of GPT‑6 Astra has produced notable results beyond coding. The model has helped engineers locate difficult bugs, inform system design choices, and generate engineering approaches. In one internal test focusing on strategic documents and other non‑coding tasks, an Airbnb user reported reaching strong output in three to four passes, compared with more than 20 rounds when using other models.
Broader uses across the marketplace
Airbnb also applies OpenAI models to customer‑facing and operational functions such as search, fraud prevention, guest and host support, and insurance claims handling. Deep use of AI and machine learning across the marketplace helps the company better understand guest preferences, spot potentially fraudulent content or claims, assist guests when travel plans change, and streamline insurance payouts for hosts.
Why this matters
As Airbnb integrates more elements of travel — homes, services, experiences, airport pickups, car rentals, and more — into a single app, access to OpenAI frontier models gives product teams more powerful tools to accelerate development and explore next steps for new features and experiences.
