Anthropic today launched Claude for Education, a version of its Claude model tailored to the needs of universities. The program aims to help higher education institutions adopt AI-enabled approaches across teaching, learning, and administration, while involving faculty and students in shaping responsible uses of AI.
What Anthropic announced
Claude for Education includes several elements designed for campus deployment:
- Learning mode: a new mode that prioritizes guiding students' reasoning over delivering ready-made answers, with an emphasis on developing critical thinking skills.
- University-wide Claude availability: full campus access agreements with Northeastern University, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and Champlain College, making Claude available to all students, faculty, and staff at those institutions.
- Academic partnerships: membership in Internet2 and collaboration with Instructure to embed AI capabilities into the Canvas learning management system.
- Student programs: a Claude Campus Ambassadors program and an initiative offering API credits to support student projects.
Use cases highlighted by Anthropic
According to Anthropic, Claude for Education provides secure and reliable AI access for an institution’s entire community. Examples offered by the company include:
- For students: drafting literature reviews with proper citations, step‑by‑step assistance for calculus problems, and feedback on thesis statements before final submission.
- For faculty: creating rubrics aligned to learning outcomes, delivering individualized feedback on essays more efficiently, and generating chemistry equations at varying difficulty levels.
- For administrative staff: analyzing enrollment trends across departments, automating repetitive email responses to common inquiries, and converting dense policy documents into accessible FAQ formats — all via a familiar chat interface with enterprise-grade security and privacy controls.
Learning mode and Projects
Learning mode operates within Projects (saved conversations that let students organize work around specific assignments or topics). Its goal is to foster independent thinking by:
- Guiding rather than answering, e.g., asking “How would you approach this problem?” instead of supplying a solution.
- Using Socratic questioning, such as “What evidence supports your conclusion?”, to deepen understanding.
- Emphasizing core concepts behind problems.
- Providing templates for research papers, study guides, and outlines.
Student opportunities
Anthropic is launching two programs aimed at students:
- Claude Campus Ambassadors: students work directly with the Anthropic team to launch educational initiatives on their campuses.
- For student builders: students building projects with Claude can apply for API credits to fund their work.
Campus-wide partnerships: Northeastern, LSE and Champlain
Northeastern University is Anthropic’s first university design partner. Under the agreement, 50,000 students, faculty, and staff across Northeastern’s 13 global campuses will have seamless access to Claude. The partnership aims to develop best practices for AI integration in higher education, create new AI-powered educational tools, and establish frameworks for responsible AI adoption in educational settings.
Northeastern also developed an AI-focused academic plan (Northeastern 2025). Joseph E. Aoun, President of Northeastern, authored Robot-Proof; the second edition of the book was published by MIT Press in August 2024 and further explores AI’s role in education and the workforce.
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) will make Claude available campus-wide to ensure equitable access for students and to study responsible deployment of AI in educational contexts. LSE President and Vice Chancellor Larry Kramer said the partnership aligns with the school’s mission to understand social change and seek practical solutions.
Champlain College, known for career-focused education, will deploy Claude across its on-campus and online programs to help students develop workplace-relevant AI skills. Alex Hernandez, President of Champlain College, said the collaboration is spurring innovations that can generate lessons valuable to all higher education.
Industry partnerships: Internet2 and Instructure
Anthropic is also partnering with organizations to integrate Claude into universities’ existing tools and workflows safely and reliably:
- Internet2: a member-driven advanced technology community that provides secure high-speed networking, cloud solutions, research support, and identity and access management tools for research and education. Anthropic has joined Internet2 and is working with members on a NET+ service evaluation.
- Instructure: the education-technology company behind the Canvas learning management system. Anthropic and Instructure are collaborating to increase equitable access to tools that support universities as they integrate AI into teaching and learning.
