On March 14, 2023, Anthropic announced Claude, a next-generation conversational AI assistant developed from the company's research into training "helpful, honest, and harmless" systems.
The model spent several months in a closed alpha with key partners including Notion, Quora and DuckDuckGo; following those tests Anthropic said it was ready to make Claude more broadly available.
What Claude does
Claude is accessible via a chat interface and through an API in Anthropic's developer console. The company describes the model as capable of a wide range of conversational and text-processing tasks while maintaining reliability and predictability. Use cases mentioned include summarization, search, creative and collaborative writing, Q&A, and coding.
Early customers reported that Claude is less likely to produce harmful outputs, is easier to converse with, and is more steerable—allowing users to reach desired outputs with less effort. The model can also follow direction on personality, tone, and behavior.
Two model tiers: Claude and Claude Instant
Anthropic is offering two versions: the high-performance Claude and a lighter, less expensive, and faster Claude Instant. The company said it plans further updates in the coming weeks and will continue to refine the systems based on safety research and deployment experience to improve helpfulness, honesty, and harmlessness.
Partner deployments and examples
Anthropic highlighted how partners are using Claude across several domains:
-
Quora and Poe: Quora made Claude available via Poe, its AI chat app. Autumn Besselman, Head of People and Comms at Quora, said users "describe Claude’s answers as detailed and easily understood, and they like that exchanges feel like natural conversation." Some Poe users commented that “Claude feels more conversational than ChatGPT” and that it is “more interactive and creative in its storytelling.”
-
Juni Learning: Juni Learning uses Claude to power the Juni Tutor Bot on Discord, an online tutoring solution. Vivian Shen, CEO of Juni Learning, said they evaluated competitors and chose to incorporate Claude because of its "helpful, high-quality responses," which enabled a conversational experience closer to a true tutor rather than surface-level answers.
-
Notion: Integration with Notion aims to boost productivity, particularly for writing and summarization. Akshay Kothari, Co-Founder & COO of Notion, said Claude's creative writing and summarization capabilities contribute to the development of Notion AI and help users work more efficiently within the Notion workspace.
-
DuckDuckGo: Anthropic is working with DuckDuckGo to integrate Claude with real-time information sources such as search. Steve Fischer, Chief Business Officer at DuckDuckGo, said they are "thrilled to be working with Anthropic on DuckAssist," an Instant Answer that uses natural language technology and sources like Wikipedia; he noted Anthropic's collaboration on answer quality while meeting DuckDuckGo's strict privacy requirements.
-
Robin AI: In the legal domain, Robin AI uses Claude to analyze contract passages and suggest customer-friendly alternative language. Richard Robinson, CEO of Robin AI, said their experience since 2019 shows nothing has matched Claude's capabilities; they find Claude strong at understanding technical language, drafting, summarizing, translating, and explaining complex concepts simply.
-
AssemblyAI: AssemblyAI, which offers APIs for audio transcription and understanding, is partnering with Anthropic to power generative AI and conversation intelligence capabilities at scale. Dylan Fox, Founder & CEO of AssemblyAI, praised Anthropic's commitment to AI integrity and research, and said the partnership helps them ship more robust LLM-backed features faster.
Why this matters
Anthropic aims to provide a broadly useful, controllable language model for companies and developers. The two-tier model offering and early partner feedback suggest Claude is intended for applications where accuracy, safety and user experience are important—such as education, legal tech, search, and productivity tools.
Anthropic invited organizations and developers interested in using Claude to request access to the service to explore how AI could improve their products and customer experiences.
