Apple today introduced its first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, at the Surprise and Shine event held in Cupertino. The phone is the first marquee device launched under the company’s new CEO, John Ternus.
Design and displays
Unlike many early foldables, Apple chose a wider form factor intended to provide a better aspect ratio for watching video when unfolded. The inner display is a 7.6‑inch Retina panel, while the outer display measures 5.4 inches. The inner screen uses an under‑display camera to create an all‑screen appearance.
Apple said it applied a custom nanotexture finish to reduce glare and to hide the crease. The hinge is built from grade 5 aluminum and incorporates more than 100 special components, according to the company, with the goal of smooth opening and closing and improved durability.
Security and connectivity
The device includes Touch ID but does not have Face ID. It can be unlocked with an Apple Watch. The phone is powered by the new A20 Pro chip and includes a C2 model/solution that enables faster uploads. Like last year’s iPhone Air, this model is eSIM‑only.
Battery life
Apple stated that the device delivers 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display and 44 hours when using the outer display.
Cameras
The iPhone Duo features a 48‑megapixel fusion main camera and a 48‑megapixel ultrawide camera with 2x optical zoom. The setup does not include a dedicated telephoto lens. As with other foldables, users can take rear‑camera selfies and view previews on the outer display. The phone also offers an animation on the outer screen (similar to features on Google Pixel phones) useful for getting children to focus when taking photos, and a smart‑take feature that uses an on‑device model to snap a picture when subjects in the frame are posing.
Software and usage modes
Apple has adapted iOS 27 for the foldable form factor: essential controls such as Wi‑Fi move to the side and can dock vertically on the home screen. Apps support split‑screen and app pairing. In vertical mode a user can pin a video to the top while using other apps in the bottom half. The device can be used half folded or placed on a table in a semi‑open position. Apple noted that later this year the device will support Apple Pencil.
Price, availability and market context
The iPhone Duo is priced at $1,999 for the 256 GB model and will be offered in two colors. Preorders begin on October 16 and the device will be available on October 23.
Rivals such as Samsung and Xiaomi launched their own wide foldables before Apple. According to analytics firm Counterpoint, foldables account for less than 2% of overall smartphone shipments. Counterpoint also said the Duo could capture up to 25% market share by the end of the year.
Why it matters
The iPhone Duo marks Apple’s entry into the foldable phone category and emphasizes hardware‑software integration (nanotexture, hinge engineering, iOS 27 optimizations). Its market impact will depend on consumer response to the price, eSIM‑only configuration, and tradeoffs such as the absence of Face ID and a telephoto lens.
