Over roughly the past six months, the process of identifying targets for Ukrainian drone strikes has accelerated markedly through the use of commercial satellite imagery combined with artificial intelligence (AI), the Wall Street Journal reported. Processes that previously took days or weeks have, in some cases, been reduced to hours because images are delivered directly to soldiers’ tablets or smartphones.

Who built the system and how it works

The system is the product of a transatlantic collaboration between Colorado-based satellite operator Vantor, Dutch geospatial company Bravo1Alpha, U.S. Persistent Systems and Ukrainian defense firm Burevij. Vantor’s ten satellites scan about seven million square kilometers per day and collect 12–15 images of any given spot on Earth. According to the Wall Street Journal, those images can reach frontline devices within about 15 minutes, bypassing the centralized evaluation in Kyiv that previously added hours or days to information flow.

Usage examples and capabilities

The paper says the system’s data have been used multiple times in the Russia–Ukraine war. In field tests, Ukrainian units identified a building concealed under a tree canopy that was used as an operational planning point by Russian forces; the satellite imagery showed armored command vehicles around the building. After three days of observation, the units destroyed the target with a drone strike.

The software does more than monitor areas: AI detects changes across wide regions, generates three-dimensional models, and can be used to plan optimal drone ingress routes. Ukrainian users report that the coordinates provided typically locate targets with about five-meter accuracy.

Risks and warnings

Shortening the decision chain also carries significant risks. Nand Mulchandani, the former technology director for AI at the CIA and the Pentagon, warned that although traditional evaluation processes slow operations, they play a crucial role in filtering out false information. Without those checks, there is a risk that forces could launch strikes based on incorrect data.

Why this matters

Integrating satellite imaging and AI creates a faster intelligence-to-strike cycle at the front, potentially offering a tactical advantage. At the same time, bypassing centralized verification and accelerating decisions can increase the likelihood of mistakes, misidentification and resulting civilian harm or operational errors. Thus the technology represents both a leap in military capability and a set of ethical, legal and safety challenges.
