New York city officials announced a one-year prohibition on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in public elementary schools. The policy, announced by Zohran Mamdani, the city's mayor, affects roughly 600,000 elementary school students.
"We are open to new technologies, but only if they serve our students," the mayor said, framing the ban as a measure to protect human relationships in classrooms. He emphasized that children should develop problem-solving and social skills through interactions with peers rather than relying on chatbots or automated systems.
Research and policy review during the ban
During the one-year ban authorities will commission studies to assess how the technology affects children, a step reported by Engadget. After the research phase, a panel composed of teachers, parents and elected officials will produce recommendations for next steps and possible rules.
High schools and teachers' permitted uses
The ban does not apply to high schools. High school students will participate in two classes during the school year that teach critical thinking about AI, intended to prevent overreliance on the technology. Many high school classes may also take part in various AI programs, but those uses will be subject to strict supervision and safety requirements.
Teachers may use AI for lesson planning and administrative tasks, but only if the tools comply with the safety conditions required for public schools.
