According to Bloomberg, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt holds approximately a 1% ownership stake in Anthropic. The report says Schmidt invested tens of millions of dollars in the AI lab’s Series A round in 2021; PitchBook data show the startup was valued at $461 million at that time.
Stakes and potential upside
Bloomberg’s estimate places Schmidt’s holding well below the roughly 2% stake held by co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei. Anthropic is widely expected to go public before the end of the year, and some top-end market estimates value the company at as much as $2 trillion.
If the company reached that upper valuation, Schmidt’s approximately 1% stake would be worth up to $20 billion, which would add to his Bloomberg-estimated net worth of $57.5 billion. Those figures depend on market valuations and the assumptions used in the calculations.
Schmidt’s investment activity
Since stepping down as Google CEO in 2011, Eric Schmidt has been an active investor in technology. He deploys capital through multiple entities, including Tomorrow Ventures, Innovation Endeavors Management, and his family office, Hillspire. Other AI-related investments he has made include Mistral, General Intuition, and Reflection AI.
Neither Schmidt nor Anthropic immediately responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting.
