Google opens early MCP access to let AI agents control Google Home devices

On Tuesday, Google launched early access to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Google Home ecosystem, enabling AI agents that support MCP to securely interact with users' smart home devices and access event histories.

Which AI agents are supported

Google says any MCP-compatible agent — including Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT and Google Antigravity — will be able to work with Google Home devices. Users can give natural language instructions to review camera summaries, monitor smart home activity, control connected devices, and build custom smart home dashboards.

Supported devices

The system will support any device within the Google Home ecosystem: Google Nest doorbells and thermostats, as well as “Works with Google Home” or Matter-compatible devices such as smart light bulbs.

Setup process

To connect an agent, users must create a Google Cloud project and configure it to use Home MCP. They then provide the MCP configuration details to their chosen agent, which performs the setup. During the setup the agent will prompt the user to sign in and grant permissions. Google also plans to offer a setup guide in the Google Home Developer Center.

Availability and pricing

Google said access to the MCP will begin rolling out today and continue over the coming weeks to subscribers in the United States who pay for Google Home Premium Advanced. That subscription tier costs $20 per month and includes features such as longer event-based video history, descriptive notifications and detailed alerts, tools to search video history, and daily summaries.

Google declined to say whether or when MCP access will be extended to other subscription tiers or markets.

Early feedback and developer outreach

During the early access period Google is soliciting feedback from adopters through its Smart Home for Developers Community to refine the integration between AI agents and Google Home.
