Google announced in May a new image-generation and design service called Google Pics. The company positions the tool as a competitor to established platforms such as Canva.
Features of the service
Google Pics lets users create designs from scratch or edit existing images. The platform leverages artificial intelligence and offers several key capabilities:
- image segmentation: select, move or resize specific subjects and objects within an image;
- editing or translating on-image text while preserving the overall design and font;
- sharing and collaboration: projects created in Pics can be shared and edited jointly with others.
Google also released a demonstration showing how these features work in practice.
Integration with Google products
Google has integrated Pics with Google Docs and Google Slides, and said it will embed the solution into Google Drive in the coming weeks.
Global rollout with limited access
Although Google has made Pics available globally, access is restricted. According to Google, the initial release is available to:
- Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers;
- Google AI Pro for Education users;
- Workspace customers on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus plans.
This means the service is initially targeted at paid Google AI and Workspace customers rather than being open to all users immediately.

Google Pics expands Google’s footprint in creative workflows by offering AI-powered editing and design tools tightly integrated with its productivity suite. The staged rollout and subscription requirements indicate Google will broaden availability over time rather than opening the service to the general public at once.
