Google has announced updates to its Android app quality standards as developers contend with memory chip shortages across the industry. The company links the supply tightness to the rise of AI data centers, which is increasing memory demand and limiting component availability.
What the new rules require
Google published two new app quality requirements this week. One of these focuses on reducing app memory usage and on optimizing application code. The company said the mobile industry now faces “significant hardware supply constraints that are altering device memory availability,” a situation that can affect consumers’ device experience.
The changes set new performance thresholds in several areas, including dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage. Google is also adding code optimization requirements aimed at preventing app slowdowns and crashes related to performance.
Tools and timeline for developers
To help developers comply, Google is rolling out tools that will alert them when an app exceeds the new thresholds so they can take corrective action. The company noted additional diagnostic tooling will arrive later in the year, including a Memory Limiter feature designed to prevent apps from consuming excessive device memory.
Google says the measures are intended to help Android app and game makers preserve quality in a market where memory may be less available, especially on low-end devices where cost constraints are a factor. Developers have until February 2027 to meet the newly documented thresholds, which Google has posted on its Android Developer site.
Zero Tap Sign-In requirement
Separately, Google will require all Play Store apps to implement the Zero Tap Sign-In requirement during device migrations by April 2027. That standard mandates that apps with user sign-ins — whether optional or mandatory — automatically restore a user’s sign-in state when they move between Android devices using the Android Restore Credentials API.
