On November 13, 2025, the state of Maryland announced a partnership with Anthropic to deploy the company's advanced AI model, Claude, across multiple state agencies to streamline government operations and improve services for its more than six million residents.
Planned uses of Claude
-
Connecting families to benefits: A Claude-powered virtual assistant will help residents apply for core benefits, including SNAP, Medicaid, temporary cash assistance, and WIC. The tool will also surface other programs for which families might qualify, connecting eligible households with supports they might otherwise miss.
-
Helping caseworkers deliver faster support: Maryland manually processes more than 150,000 documents each month for various assistance programs. Under the new partnership, caseworkers will use Claude to speed and improve document verification, confirm eligibility, and provide policy guidance in complex cases.
-
Upskilling workers and supporting community services: Maryland plans an AI upskilling pilot for early-career professionals in the state’s identified “lighthouse” industries to support economic priorities. Anthropic will also collaborate with the Governor's Innovation Team on a new tool that uses Claude to identify unmet local market needs — such as fresh food and childcare — and provide local leaders and organizations with the data, analysis, and resources to address those gaps.
Building on prior deployments
This partnership expands on Maryland’s earlier use of Claude. In June, the state launched a bilingual Claude-powered chatbot that simplified information access for more than 600,000 Maryland residents receiving SUN Bucks benefits and reduced call center volume.
Collaboration and governance
Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei met with Maryland Governor Wes Moore this summer to discuss AI’s potential to help state governments deliver benefits to those who need them. Since then, teams from Anthropic, the Rockefeller Foundation, and Percepta have worked together to develop programs tailored to Maryland’s needs that could serve as a model for other states.
Anthropic emphasizes its commitment to responsible AI deployment, including rigorous safety testing, and says Claude is particularly suited to sensitive government applications. The company is assisting Maryland in translating AI governance principles into concrete initiatives intended to make public services more efficient, accessible, and responsive.
For other public sector organizations
Other public sector entities interested in using Claude are invited to contact Anthropic's public sector team to learn more and get started.
