Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) reported that an Nvidia Jetson Orin computer module was found inside the wreckage of a new Russian S‑71 Monochrome air-launched cruise missile on August 12. The discovery was reported in technical media, including Interesting Engineering.
According to the HUR, the presence of the module may indicate that Russian weapons are employing artificial intelligence (AI) or machine vision capabilities to support targeting or autonomous functions. The Ukrainian statement did not specify the exact role the Nvidia component serves within the missile's systems.
Reliance on foreign components
Experts examining the wreckage identified a total of 35 non-Russian components. That figure underscores how much Russian drones and missiles rely on foreign technology, despite progressively tighter international sanctions imposed since the start of the war.
What is Nvidia Jetson Orin?
The Nvidia Jetson Orin family is designed for artificial intelligence, machine vision, and autonomous systems. Depending on the model, the series can deliver up to roughly 275 TOPS (trillions of operations per second). The product line is built to provide high computational performance in a compact form factor suitable for embedded systems.
Missile characteristics
The HUR noted that the S‑71 was developed to fit inside weapon bays of Russian aircraft and drones such as the Su‑57 fighter and the S‑70 Okhotnik drone. The cruise missile is reportedly difficult to detect on radar and capable of independently searching for targets, which aligns with the significance of finding a high-performance AI-capable module in its interior.
