On Monday, OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot tailored for adolescent users that turns on age-appropriate protections by default and adds features intended to support learning and reduce misuse.
Why the new version?
The launch follows a wave of lawsuits and public concern over AI chatbots’ safety shortcomings, which critics have linked to teenagers’ suicides and other mental health issues. OpenAI says the new product is designed to better protect young users and to address problems such as ChatGPT-assisted cheating in schools.
Key features
-
Study Mode: the new Study Mode offers guiding questions and step-by-step support so teens work through material and build understanding rather than simply obtaining quick answers. OpenAI positions this mode as a way to encourage deeper engagement with problems.
-
Homework reminders: when the system detects behavior that appears to be aimed at cheating rather than learning, it will surface homework reminders and prompt the teen to switch to Study Mode.
-
Assessment and visualization tools: the app will support quizzes and learning visualizations intended to aid comprehension and practice.
-
Parental and guardian controls: parents or guardians can choose whether Study Mode is enabled by default and can use existing family tools and parental control settings to manage preferences.
Safety measures and limitations
OpenAI says app-appropriate protections will be enabled by default in ChatGPT for Teens to reduce exposure to harmful or developmentally inappropriate content. These measures are based on OpenAI’s Under-18 Principles in its Model Spec, which the company says is informed by developmental science and expert guidance.
However, it remains unclear how difficult it will be for teens to bypass these new controls in practice. Teenagers often find ways around parental controls and other restrictions, and until the teen mode undergoes more rigorous real-world testing, the resilience of these safety measures against circumvention is uncertain.
Additional initiatives
OpenAI also announced a partnership with CodeAI to help teens learn about AI — how it works, how to direct or question it, and how to use it. The company noted that it already offers ChatGPT for Teachers to give schools institution-managed access to AI and related support.
Conclusion
ChatGPT for Teens aims to combine default safety protections with tools that promote learning, such as Study Mode, homework reminders, quizzes, and parental controls. While these features are intended to reduce harm and discourage academic cheating, their practical effectiveness against savvy users remains to be proven.
