OpenAI announced the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program, which will provide free access to its frontier AI models and related tools to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers at selected research universities. What participants receive
Approved researchers will have access across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, including the GPT‑5.6 family at launch; GPT‑5.6 Sol Pro is among the models available. Workspaces include business‑grade privacy and security protections, and institutional data are not used to train OpenAI models by default. Each approved researcher may invite up to four collaborators from their institution; invited collaborators must also verify affiliation and count toward the program’s total account limit.
Model variants and benchmark performance
The GPT‑5.6 family is offered with different tradeoffs: GPT‑5.6 Terra aims for capability and efficiency for everyday research, GPT‑5.6 Luna provides faster responses for lighter tasks, and GPT‑5.6 Sol targets the hardest scientific and mathematical problems. On FrontierMath Tier 4, measuring research‑level mathematical reasoning, GPT‑5.6 Sol scores 83% compared with 72.5% for GPT‑5.5. On GeneBench Pro, which evaluates complex biological data analysis and scientific reasoning, GPT‑5.6 Sol Pro solves 31.5% of tasks.
Tools, skills and data connectors
Researchers will be able to use more than 75 life‑science skills spanning genetics, genomics, sequencing, single‑cell analysis, protein modeling, and drug discovery. Connectors provide access to scientific literature, public genomic and clinical databases, satellite imagery, computational notebooks, data platforms, and reference managers. Codex assists with writing and debugging code, analysing datasets, and building reproducible workflows; ChatGPT Work supports longer projects such as finding funding, preparing grant applications, reviewing literature, drafting manuscripts, and preparing materials to communicate results.
Training, support and community feedback
The program includes tailored training and hands‑on support for varying levels of experience, from introductory guidance to advanced research applications. Participants will have access to specialists familiar with research workflows and opportunities to share practical approaches and feedback with OpenAI. The company frames its role as providing capable tools and letting researchers choose which scientific problems to pursue.
Related commitments and partnerships
ChatGPT for Academic Researchers is part of OpenAI’s broader commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research and discovery. This includes NextGenAI, a $50 million initiative supporting research institutions, and collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission to bring frontier AI to researchers at national laboratories and universities.
Early indicators of adoption
OpenAI reports that about 1.3 million people use ChatGPT each week for advanced science and mathematics, generating roughly 8.4 million messages weekly. The company says adoption is especially visible in mathematics: over the past six months AI has moved from occasional use on isolated problems to a more regular component of mathematical research, and an increasing number of papers acknowledge ChatGPT’s contribution.
