Spotify is rolling out a new visual indicator designed to help listeners distinguish real artists from songs or profiles generated or impersonated by artificial intelligence.
The company will add a green badge containing a checkmark that appears only next to artists that Spotify has authenticated. According to Spotify, the “Verified by Spotify” badge signals that an artist:
- shows sustained listener activity and engagement over time;
- meets popularity criteria under the platform’s rules;
- has an identifiable artist presence both on and off the platform — for example, regularly performs live, maintains social media accounts linked to Spotify, and offers merchandise or other products fans can purchase.
As a result, artists created by AI or artists impersonated via AI are not eligible for verification at this time. Spotify noted that the notion of an artist’s authenticity is complex and evolving, and that the company may reassess this approach in the future.
The new verification badge will begin appearing on artist profiles and alongside names in search results in the coming weeks. The initiative aims to increase transparency about content origin and help listeners recognize genuinely active, identifiable artists on the platform.
